In the recent months, the food price here saw an increase of about 20% to 30% and included a 6% government tax. Despite all these, it is still affordable to dine here and the portion of the food served is still generous.
The new menu with the same and new dishes |
Their signature dish, roasted chicken (Mar Hiang Sa) now costs RM 14.80 for half chicken. It used to be RM 12 (see my old post below). Sometimes, this dish is out of stock during weekend nights. We had experienced this before.
Half chicken costs RM 14.80 |
Their stir-fried kailan (HK style) now costs RM 11.80 (if I am not mistaken, it used to be below RM10)
The crunchy kailan with its fried leaves |
Their fried udon with black pepper sauce and chicken (RM 8.80) is good too. It is advisable to share the plate of udon if you are also ordering other dishes like us. Happy dining!
This is only half of the portion on my plate! |

Do you know Penangites are good bargain hunters? Yes, we are. We want things that are affordable and also of good quality (in other words, "cheap and big"). Therefore, if you do not know where you can get good things at a good price, just follow the Penang crowd. This is what I always do. Springs Town Restaurant is relatively new in Georgetown, Penang. Although it is new, you will see a big crowd at meal time and even there are those who are willing to wait outside the restaurant for tables.
The menu |
The name of this place is called Lan Ting in Chinese. According to a local Chinese daily, the owner named the restaurant after Jay Chou's song Lan Ting Xu. Lan Ting Xu was actually the famous work of calligraphy of Wang Xizhi in the year 353 (Source: en.wikipedia.org).
The overall ambience of this place was rather cosy. The place was clean too.
Cosy enough? Yellow lighting does the trick |
Their signature dish was crispy fried chicken with sweet and spicy sauce. The skin of the chicken was very crispy and make sure you eat it with the sauce. Although it was fried, the chicken was still very juicy. A half chicken cost RM 12 (for 3 pax) and the whole chicken cost RM 24 (for 6 pax). This is a must-try!
Their signature dish: fried chicken with sauce |
We also ordered stir-fried kailan and fried kailan in a single dish. The fried kailan was indeed very tasty and it looked and tasted a little like seaweed.
Kailan: fried and stir-fried |
Have you ever tried papaya and pork rib soup? It sounded weird but the taste was quite good. It tasted more of pork rib and the papaya lent its reddish colour to the soup. It was RM 6.
The nutirtious papaya and pork rib soup |
The red snapper was steamed in Teow Chew (Chinese) style. It was a little salty and sour and tasted just perfect. The fish was very fresh.
Teow Chew style steamed fish |
The other two dishes that we ordered were stir-fried lettuce and seaweed soup. The dishes that we ordered truly reflected that we were a health conscious people.
Stir-fried lettuce |
Seaweed soup |
We ordered iced milk tea, hot honey lemon and fresh orange juice.
Hot honey lemon |
Fresh orange juice |
There was no service charge or government tax applied in this restaurant. So in total, we only spent RM 117.20 for a dinner for six and we were indeed very happy with our meal and left them a tip.
